She was a daughter of Aeolus, god of the winds. Her
husband Ceyx, disregarding her entreaties for safety, sailed to Ionia
and was shipwrecked. He appeared all naked and dripping to her in a
dream and told her of his death. When she found his body at the
seashore, she leaped into the sea to drown herself. The gods, taking
pity, changed her and Ceyx into kingfishers. Thenceforth, each year for
seven days prior to and seven days after the winter solstice, the winds
ceased to blow so that the birds might hatch their eggs in the nests on
the sea.
