He was son of Theseus by Hippolyte. Theseus married Phaedra after Hippolyte was killed by Hercules. Once, during Theseus' absence, Phaedra made advances to Hippolytus, whom she had fallen in love with at first sight. But Hippolytus rejected Phaedra's advances then and there, and that infuriated her. When Theseus was back, Phaedra then falsely accused Hippolytus of having made advances to her. Finally, Theseus begged Poseidon to avenge him and the god sent a monster out of the sea, and the monster so frightened Hippolytus' horses that he was thrown from his chariot and dragged to death.
