Otus and Ephialtes were the giant sons of Poseidon
and Iphimedeia, wife of Aloeus. They proved to be the juvenile
delinquents of Greek theogeny. They were already nine fathoms tall and
nine cubits broad when they were but nine years old, and they were still
growing at the rate of nine feet a year. They imprisoned Ares in a
bronze jar for thirteen months. And Ares would have perished there had
not Eriboia told Hermes to come to his rescue. The two once even tried
to rape Artemis, the goddess of chastity. Fortunately, Apollo drove a
deer between them and in shooting at it each killed the other.
