He was a ferryman ferrying between Lesbos and Chios.   Once Aphrodite came to him disguised as an ugly old woman.   He good-naturedly gave her a free passage on his boat.   In return she gave him a magic salve which made him young and handsome.   The woman of Lesbos, therefore , all fell in love with him.   The poetess Sappho is said to have thrown herself into the sea because he did not requite her affection.

1.      “He was a ferryman ferrying between Lesbos and Chios”:他是個渡船夫,在 LesbosChios 之間擺渡。

2.      “Once Aphrodite came to him disguised as an ugly old woman”:有一次 Aphrodite 來到他那裡,裝扮成一個醜陋的老婦人。

3.      “He good-naturedly gave her a free passage on his boat”:他和善地給她免費地通行,在他船上。 “good-natured”:好性情的、和善的。

4.      “In return she gave him a magic salve which made him young and handsome”:為了回報,她給他一種神奇藥膏,那使他年輕英俊。 “in return”:為了回報。 “magic salve”:神奇的、魔幻的藥膏。

5.      “The woman of Lesbos, therefore , all fell in love with him”:因此,Lesbos 的女人都愛上他。
