She was Odin's daughter.  Odin put her into a magic sleep, dooming her to wake and love as a mortal because she had defended in battle those whom the Norns had predestined to death.   Sigurd wakened her from that sleep and later impersonated Gunnar so as to enable Gunnar to woo and win her.  After she discovered the fact, she had Sigurd murdered and then took her own life.
