“I pall of polls,” I said. “Of polls? What polls?” she asked, rolling her eyes. “The polls about the toll,” I said. “The toll? What toll?” she asked, rolling her eyes again. “The toll for passing along the freeway,” I said. “Freeway? A freeway with toll?” she asked, rolling her eyes once more. “Sure, a freeway is never free, and a tollman never tolls,” I assured her and set my eyes on her eyes. “A tollman? But never tolls?” she asked, and her rolling eyes pooled in all perplexity. “No, they never toll the bell and never toll any knell.” I told the truth, and this time her rolling eyes pooled with droll pleasure. Then I strolled off swollen with unrolled complacency, determined to keep this droll trick on a scroll.

2. poll
4. freeway = throughway, expressway (高速公路),字中之 free 是 free from obstructions (免於受阻) 之意,並非 free of charge (免收費)。
swollen with: 漲滿。
