A Nip was sipping his tea when a pip popped into it. “Is it a pip of a pear or a pip of an apple?” the Nip wondered. He then nipped it off with fingertips and tried to rip it open with teeth after peering at it. But the pip was full of pep. It slipped from the Nip's lips, leaped to the napkin, and then skipped to the Nip's hip. “What a trick and trip!” the Nip cried out with zip, “I'll grip it before I die!” He got up and put down his hand. But before he could grip it, a cup slipped, too, from the table, and the Nip's tea dripped down and the pip was again dipped in tea.

〔中譯〕 一個尼普正在啜飲他的茶，而一粒種子蹦跳到茶裡來。那尼普想知道：「是梨子的子或蘋果的子呢？」於是他用指尖把那個子夾出，而在端詳一陣子之後，用牙齒想把它扯裂開來。可是那個子充滿活力。它從尼普的嘴唇邊溜走，跳到餐巾上，然後再躍到那尼普的屁股邊。那尼普帶著精力喊叫說：「好個把戲、好個旅途啊！我死也要抓住它。」說完他站起來而放下他的手。可是在他抓住那個子之前，桌上的杯子也溜了。結果尼普的茶滴了下來，而那個子再度浸在茶水裡。
〔注解〕
1. Nip: (輕蔑語) 尼普、日本人 (= Nipponese, Japanese)。小寫 nip 當 v. 為「夾、捏、箝、搯、摘、咬」。用指尖 (fingertips) 可以 nip 東西。
2. sip: 一小口一小口的 「啜飲」。
3. pip: 蘋果、梨子、柑橘、檸檬等的粒狀 「(種) 子」。紙牌或骰子上的「點」也叫 pip。
4. pop: 「砰」的一聲爆開或跳動。爆米花為 popcorn。
5. rip: 扯開、撕裂。用牙齒可 rip up (撕裂) 或 rip open (扯開) 東西。
6. peer 當 n. 為「同儕」，當 v. 為「注視、端詳」。
7. pep 與 zip 都是俚語或口語的 energy (精力)、vigor (活力)。
8. slip：溜。 leap：跳。 skip：輕跳。
9. hip：屁股、臀部。 grip： 緊抓。
10. trick：把戲。那 pip 好像在跟那 Nip 玩把戲。
11. trip：旅行。那 pip 從茶杯到桌巾上再到日本人的 hip，算很長的 trip。
12. drip：滴下。日本人的 cup 倒了，tea 就自然 dripped down。
13. dip：浸。那粒 pip 似乎執意要 dip 在茶裡。它也想 sip tea 嗎？
