唸音 【TT28】

Tom and Sam are both slummers.  One night, they both awoke from their slumbers.  Tom came to Sam's shabby shed and slumped into his shabby chair.   “In the hallowed name of god and upon the tallowed book of the Bible, chum,” Tom said to Sam, “it's more than a sorrow to wallow in this mud or mire, chum.”  “And it's nothing but hollow to say you'd swallow down your fury and fire, chum,” said Sam to Tom.  Obviously, the two boyhood chums had ideas which chimed in with each other.

〔中譯〕 湯姆和薩姆都是貧民。某晚，他們都從睡眠中醒來。湯姆來到薩姆的破屋子，倒落在他的破椅中。「老友，以上帝的神聖之名，以及以帶著油脂的聖經發誓啊，老友」湯姆跟薩姆說，「在這種泥巴或泥沼中翻滾不只是悲傷而已啊，老友。」「而那也只不過是空言而已，如果說你願意吞下你的憤怒與火氣啊，老友。」薩姆跟湯姆說。顯然，這兩個兒時的老友，觀念上是相互合而一致的。

〔注解〕

1.      slum 是「貧民區」，但常用複數 slums。 slummer 是住貧民區的人。 slumber 則是「睡眠」， slump 是「陷下，倒落」。

2.      shabby: 破舊的。 shed: 小屋，簡陋的棚舍。

3.      hallowed: 使神聖的。 tallowed: 使沾油脂的。

4.      chum: 原指「室友」(roommate)，現指「好友」(intimate friend)。

5.      wallow: 打滾、翻動。 swallow: 當 v. 為「吞嚥」，當 n. 為「燕子」。

6.      mud or mine: 泥巴或泥沼。指極差的環境。

7.      sorrow: 悲傷。 hollow: 空洞、空虛。

8.      fury and fire: 憤怒與火氣。指不滿的情緒。

9.      chime in with: 像組鐘和鳴一樣的「協同一致」。
