[J-141] The Tipping System
After a week, at a hotel, of tipping doormen, bell boys, waiters, hatcheck girls, ad infinitum, a traveler was completely fed up with the whole system. Then came a knock on his door. “Who is it?” he called.
“The bell boy, sir. Telegram for you.”
A crafty gleam came into the eyes of the tip-tortured guest. “Just slip it under the door,” he directed.
Barely a moment's hesitation, then, “I can't, sir!”
“And why not?” snarled the unhappy guest.
“Because, sir,” answered the determined bell boy, “it's on a tray.”
(在衣帽间服务之女孩), ad infinitum (等等无穷无尽), be fed up with (腻于…,消受不了…), crafty (狡诈的,骗人的), gleam (一丝微光), tip-tortured (被小费折磨的), snarl (吠叫,咆哮), tray (端东西的盘子)。 [复习填充] After a week, at a hotel, of t_____ doormen, bell boys, waiters, hatcheck girls, ad in______, a traveler was completely fed ___ with the whole system.
