They were the three frightful daughters of Phorcys and Ceto.   They had snakes for hair, and to look on them would turn men to stone.   Medusa, the youngest of the three, was alone mortal among them.   She was slain by Perseus who killed her with the aid of a mirror-like shield.   But before she died, from her blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse she was pregnant with by Poseidon.
