He was king of the Nibelungs.   For him Sigurd in disguise wooed Brunhild.   He refused to reveal to Atli the whereabouts of the Nibelung treasure, and was therefore thrown into a den of poisonous snakes.   He played the harp to charm the snakes, but was fatally bitten by the only one that had not been charmed.
