He was a youth beloved by Apollo and Zephyr (the West Wind). Once Apollo and Hyacinthus were throwing the discus (or the quoit) to see which of them could throw it farthest.   The jealous Zephyr blew upon it and made it strike Hyacinthus full in the forehead.  The stricken youth fell to the ground dead.   Then the blood-stained grass grew into the flower called hyacinth henceforth.
