唸音

He was son of Theiodamas (king of the Dryopes).   He became Hercules' page after Hercules killed his father.   Hercules grew very fond of him and took him along on the famous voyage with the Argonauts.   On the island of Cios, Hylas went to a spring to fetch water, and was held prisoner there by the nymphs who were enamored of him.   Hercules could not find him and searched for him for such a long time that the Argonauts grew impatient and sailed away without the two.

1.      “He became Hercules' page after Hercules killed his father”:他變成 Hercules 的童僕,在 Hercules 殺死他父親之後。 “page”:童僕。

    據說Hercules 吃掉他父親的牛,他父親於是來攻打 Hercules,因而被殺。

2.      “Hercules grew very fond of him and took him along on the famous voyage with the Argonauts” Hercules

注意on a voyage, on a picnic, on a vacation ...

3.      “On the island of Cios, Hylas went to a spring to fetch water”:在 Cios 那島上,Hylas 去一個泉水那裡要拿水。 “fetch”:拿回。

4.      “and was held prisoner there by the nymphs who were enamored of him”:而被那些愛上他的林泉女神俘虜在那裡。 “hold 某人 prisoner”:俘虜某人。 “nymph”:山林湖海泉水之女神。 “be enamored of” =  be enamored by (被 …

注意:在古式的語法中, “of” 常等於 “by”,但今日此用法僅存在於有情緒、情感的字眼時,如 “beloved of him” =  beloved by him, “frightened of the dark” =  frightened by the dark, 等。

5.      “Hercules could not find him and searched for him for such a long time” Hercules找不到他而尋找他那麼一段長的時間。注意 “search the house” (搜查房子),但 “search for him” (尋找他)

6.      “that the Argonauts grew impatient and sailed away without the two”:以至於那些阿果號航員變成不耐煩,於是沒有他們兩個便航行走了。
