She was daughter of Inachus.   Zeus loved her and changed her into a heifer in order to conceal her from jealous Hera.   Hera, however, set the hundred-eyed monster Argus to watch the cow lest it should be changed back into human form.   Zeus then sent Hermes to kill Argus, and Hera therefore had Io tormented by a gadfly.   Consequently, the heifer swam across the Ionian sea to Egypt and there Io resumed her former self and bore a son, Epaphus.
