He was son of Aeson and leader of the Argonauts. His uncle, Pelias, unlawfully withheld the throne of Thessaly from him, but promised to surrender it when Jason brought him the Golden Fleece from Colchis. Jason had a great ship (the Argo) built, gathered a band of heroes (the Argonauts), and set out for the fleece. After many adventures, Jason seized it with the assistance of Medea, the daughter of the king of Colchis. In his old age Jason was killed by the falling prow of the rotting Argo, which had been drawn up on the beach and under which he happened to be sitting.
