唸音

He was the god with two faces, one in front, the other at the back of his head.   As he guarded doors, he became the god of entries or beginnings.   The word “janitor” stems from the first of these two senses, and the word “January” from the second.   Although “janus-faced” implies deceiving or duplicity today, his double faces actually implied vigilance in the past.   It is said that the doors of his temple were kept open in time of war and closed in time of peace.   They were rarely closed, however.

1.      “He was the god with two faces, one in front, the other at the back of his head”:他是有兩張臉的神,ㄧ在前,另ㄧ在他頭部後面。

2.      “As he guarded doors, he became the god of entries or beginnings”:因為他守衛門,所以他變成入口之神或起始之神。

3.      “The word ‘janitor’ stems from the first of these two senses, and the word ‘January’ from the second” “janitor” (管門員) 這個字來自這兩個意義的第一個,而 “January” (一月) 這個字來自第二個。 “stem from” =  come from:來自。

4.      “Although ‘janus-faced’ implies deceiving or duplicity today, his double faces actually implied vigilance in the past”:雖然今天“janus-faced” 暗示欺騙或兩面作風,可是他的雙臉在過去事實上暗示警覺。 “duplicity”:兩面的欺瞞作風。 “vigilance”:警覺、警戒。

5.      “It is said that the doors of his temple were kept open in time of war and closed in time of peace”:據說他的廟門在戰爭時會保持開著,而和平時保持關起來。 “be kept open (closed)”:被保持開著 (關著)

6.      “They were rarely closed, however”:可是,它們很少關著。
