He was the son of King Ban of Brittany.   He was stolen as a child by the Lady of the Lake and brought by her to King Arthur's court when he reached manhood.   He became one of the most famous knights of the Round Table.   He had an illicit love affair with Queen Guinevere, and thus his honor was rooted in dishonor.   When Arthur and Modred were wounding each other for the kingdom, Launcelot rushed back to help Arthur but arrived too late.   He became a priest and guarded Arthur's grave after Guinevere had taken the veil.
