He lived in Abydos, a town on the Asian side of the Hellespont directly opposite Sestos, a town on the European side, where Hero lived.   He loved Hero so much that he swam across the strait every night to see her, guided by a light she kept burning.   One night, a storm extinguished the light and he was drowned.   Hero then drowned herself to unite with him in heaven.
