He was the Argonaut who killed the Calydonian Boar. When he was a newborn baby, it was revealed to his mother Althaea that he would die as soon as a log then burning on the hearth was consumed.  Althaea snatched the log from the hearth, extinguished the flames which were burning it, and hid it away wrapped in a cloth. Years later, Meleager killed his maternal uncles in a quarrel.  Althaea then threw the log back into a fire and let it be burned up.
