He was the son of Laius and Jocasta, the king and
queen of Thebes. It was prophesied that the child would kill his father
and marry his mother. So they pierced the child's feet and asked a
shepherd to discard him on a mountainside. The shepherd took pity on
the child and gave him to another shepherd, and the child was finally
brought up by the king and queen of Corinth. The grown-up Oedipus was
then told the oracle that he would kill his father and marry his
mother. Horrified, he left Corinth and set out for Thebes. On the way
he met his real father Laius and killed him in a scuffle over the right
of way. Approaching Thebes, he encountered the Sphinx, solved the
monster's riddle, and compelled her to hurl herself over the cliff to
her death. For this he was given the hand of Thebes' recently-widowed
queen, and so, unwittingly, fulfilled the prophecy. When he knew the
facts of the patricide and incest, he plucked out his own eyes and went
into exile.
