He was Hermes's son, and he was a noisy, merry god of herds and flocks. He was part animal, with a goat's horns, ears, and hoofs. He pursued the nymph Syrinx, who turned into the reed with which he made the panpipe or syrinx that could sing as sweetly as the nightingale in spring. Though playful, he was irritable, especially if disturbed during his noontime nap. He was always in love with one nymph or another, but always rejected because of his ugliness.
