She was daughter of Zeus (Jupiter) and Demeter (Ceres). Hades (Pluto) rose suddenly from the underworld and seized her and carried her down to his realm. All growth of vegetation stopped on the earth while her disconsolate mother sought her. Finally Zeus ruled that Hades must give her up unless she had consented to her own abduction. It turned out that she had eaten six pomegranate seeds in the underworld and because of that act she was allowed to return to the upper world only six months each year.
