They were nymphs living on an island near Scylla and Charybdis. They were half-women, half-birds. They lured sailors to their deaths on rocky coasts by seductive singing. The Argonauts heard them and would have perished had not Orpheus, who accompanied them, played even more enchantingly than the Sirens sang. Odysseus heard them and survived because he had his men fill their ears with beeswax and then tie him to the mast. Later, the Sirens leaped into the sea and were changed to rocks.
