They were the Clashing Rocks at
the entrance to the Hellespont. They clashed together when anything
tried to pass between them. Even Zeus had no power over them. Every
morning he sent two doves for his ambrosia; one was always crushed by
the Rocks. However, under the special protection of Hera, the Argonauts
succeeded in passing between them. They were instructed to make trial
with a dove. As the dove darted through, the Rocks rushed together but
they only sheared off the bird's tail feathers. The Argonauts then
rowed the Argo through with tremendous speed as the Rocks were
rebounding. Thus, they managed to make it with the loss of only a part
of the stern. After the successful passage, the Rocks joined to become
one, fixed rock.
