They were instructed to make trial with a dove. As the dove darted through, the Rocks rushed together but they only sheared off the bird's tail feathers. The Argonauts then rowed the Argo through with tremendous speed as the Rocks were rebounding. Thus, they managed to make it with the loss of only a part of the stern. After the successful passage, the Rocks joined to become one, fixed rock.
