one of the Argonauts. He slew Periphetes and Procrustes. His
stepmother Medea tried to poison him, but his father recognized him as
his son by the sword he bore. After he succeeded to the throne of
Athens, he freed the state from the tribute of youths and maidens which Minos compelled them to send each year to Crete. He also overcame the
Amazons and carried off their queen, Antiope. After Antiope's death, he
married Phaedra, sister of Ariadne. In his old age he gave up his
kingship and retired to Scyros, where he was treacherously murdered by
King Lycomedes.
