He was the founder of Thebes and
the one who introduced the alphabet into Greece. He came to Delphi to
ask Apollo where his lost sister Europa was. Apollo told him not to
trouble further about her, and suggested that he follow a heifer and
build his city at the spot where it lay down to rest. Cadmus took the
advice, but first he had to fight a terrible dragon which guarded a
spring near by. When the dragon was dead, Athena appeared to him and
told him to sow the earth with the dragon's teeth. He obeyed, and to
his terror he saw armed men spring up from the furrows. He then incited
them to fight one another. Thus, only five of them survived to help him
found the nobility of Thebes.
