She was daughter of Chryses, a priest of Apollo.   She was captured by the Greeks and given to Agamemnon.   Her father came to ransom her but was rudely rejected.   Apollo, offended at this slight to his priest, sent a plague to scourge the Grecian camp. Finally, Agamemnon had to give her up and took the maid Briseis, in compensation, from Achilles.   That, in turn, caused Achilles's wrath, which became the theme of Iliad.
