He was a cunning Athenian artificer who fled from Athens to Crete after killing his nephew Perdix.   In service of King Minos and Queen Pasiphaë at Crete, he constructed a bronze cow to gratify the queen's strange lust, and a labyrinth to house the Minotaur which she gave birth to.   Later, he was imprisoned by the king.   But he escaped by constructing wings for himself and his son Icarus.
