They were gigantic, one-eyed creatures, ferocious by nature and given to cannibalism.  Their leader was Polyphemus, son of Poseidon, whom Odysseus blinded in order to escape from their cave.   According to Hesiod, however, the Cyclops helped Zeus in his war against Cronus and they fashioned his thunderbolts.
