She was Acrisius' daughter.  An oracle said that she would bear a child that would kill her father.  Therefore, Acrisius shut her up in a tower to prevent any man from coming to her.  Zeus, however, visited her there in the form of a shower of gold, and thus she became pregnant and bore Perseus, who did kill his grandfather in the long run.
