She was Hercules' wife. Once when the Centaur Nessus was ferrying her over a river, he attempted to violate her and Hercules shot him with a poisoned arrow. Deianira took the dying Centaur's word and preserved some of his blood to recall Hercules' love. Years later, when Hercules brought Iole home from Oechalia, Deianira soaked a garment in the blood and sent it to her husband as a gift. When Hercules put the garment on, it burned his flesh like fire and could not be removed. Finally he died in agony and Deianira killed herself in remorse.
