It was an island formerly called Ortygia.   When Zeus got Leto pregnant, he sent her there as her sanctuary to keep her from the pursuing hatred of Hera.   It was there that Leto gave birth to her great twin children: Apollo and Artemis.   They say the island was originally a floating island, but after the great event it became fixed.
