[J-105] Reading the Bill 读法案/账单
After a lengthy, heated debate in Congress recently, one Representative stalked out of the House only to meet his tailor on the street.
“Excuse me, sir,” said the tailor, “but did you get the bill I sent you last month?”
“Certainly I got it,” came the dignified reply. “And it has already received its first reading.”
[译注] 最近在国会里,经过冗长热烈的辩论之后,某个众议员溜出了众议院,结果在街上碰到了他的裁缝师。
「对不起,先生」裁缝师说,「你拿到了上个月我送给你的账单没有?」
「的确我拿到了,」来了很有尊严的回答。「而它已经接受了第一读。」 注: 1. bill可指「法案」或「账单」,法案在议会通常要经过三读 (three readings) 才算通过。美国的国会 Congress 包括 Senate (参院) 和 House of Representatives (众院)。 2. stalk (僭行), only to... (结果…), dignified (有尊严的)。
