Like his neighbor Jane, Ted is an illiterate three-year-old child. One day, however, his mother found him seemingly writing something in earnest on a sheet of paper. “What're you scratching, Ted?” his mother asked. “I'm scribbling a letter to Jane,” Ted answered at once. “But you haven't learned to write, have you?” “No, and Jane hasn't learned to read. She won't take me to task for any marks I make.”
