A doting mother was afraid that her little Tom might be hurt at school. So the first day she sent Tom to school, she demanded this of Tom's teacher: “Mr. Brown, no matter what Tom may do, could you please just let him be free from any type of punishment?” Mr. Brown hesitated a moment, but he then replied: “Impunity is not really good to boys. I don't think I have to spare the rod.” “All right, then,” the mother said. “In case Tom misbehaves, let the rod fall on his neighboring boy. That's enough to scare Tom.”
