[J-179]  A Doting Mother

A doting mother was afraid that her little Tom might be hurt at school.  So the first day she sent Tom to school, she demanded this of Tom's teacher: Mr. Brown, no matter what Tom may do, could you please just let him be free from any type of punishment?  Mr. Brown hesitated a moment, but he then replied: Impunity is not really good to boys.  I don't think I have to spare the rod.  All right, then, the mother said.  In case Tom misbehaves, let the rod fall on his neighboring boy.  That's enough to scare Tom.

Spare the rod and spoil the child (省下杆子就毁了孩子)   spare the rod (省下杆子) 即「不打小孩」之意。

        2. impunity (免罚) = freedom from punishment.
