A new maid was talking with her mistress about the pay. “How about one hundred bucks a week?” the mistress offered. “One hundred? What's my duty?” the maid asked. “Well, just cooking, washing, looking after the kids, and doing some other chores,” the mistress assured her. “How many are the kids?” “Just three.” “I quit!” the maid declared, and added: “There's a river in front of the house, and a well beside it. Sooner or later a kid might get drowned.” “What inauspicious prospect you're seeing! Quit if you like!” the mistress protested. “Who wants to stay? The house has no backdoor. Can I save myself in case of fire?” the maid retorted.
[译注] 新来的女仆在跟女主人谈薪资。 「一周一百块如何？」女主人提议说。 「一百？我的职责是什么？」女仆问。「啊，不过是煮饭、洗衣、看小孩，还有做些其它的杂事，」女主人向她保证。「小孩有几个？」「只是三个。」「我不干了！」女仆宣告说，然后补充：「这房子前面有河流，旁边有井，迟早有小孩会溺死。」「你看到的前景多么不吉利啊！你高兴就走吧！」女主人抗议说。「谁要留？这房子没有后门。火灾时我救得了自己吗？」女仆反驳说。 注： 1. ”prospect” 为「前景、指望、期待的人选」。在此文中，女仆非好的期待人选，而她看到的「钱」景和「前景」也都没有好的「指望」。 2. pay (薪水、工资)， buck 是 dollar 之俚语， chore (杂役)， quit (辞职、不干)， inauspicious (不吉利)，retort (反驳)。
