[J-213] The Peasant Doctor
A
peasant often beat his wife. In order to repay him for his beatings, his wife
told a lie to two royal messengers: “My husband is a marvelous physician. He can treat
any patient in any case.” The peasant was consequently brought to the
court to remove a fishbone from the throat of a prince. There awkwardly the
peasant could only make funny faces before he did anything. His funny faces,
however, caused the prince to laugh the bone out. This marvelous treatment
brought the peasant such fame that he was soon beset by multitudes who wished
treatment. Facing the difficult situation, the peasant said to all the
comers: “Sorry,
the only way I can cure you is to burn the greatest sufferer among you.” Hearing this, all of the patients
declared themselves well.
