He was the god with two faces, one in front, the other at the back of his head.   As he guarded doors, he became the god of entries or beginnings.   The word janitor stems from the first of these two senses, and the word January from the second.   Although janus-faced implies deceiving or duplicity today, his double faces actually implied vigilance in the past.   It is said that the doors of his temple were kept open in time of war and closed in time of peace.   They were rarely closed, however.
