1.      He acted as judge of a musical contest between Apollo and Pan.   He declared Pan to be the winner and Apollo changed his ears into those of an ass.   He then hid his ears under his cap and his barber was enjoined to secrecy on pain of death.   The barber could not bear to keep this incommunicable secret.   He dug a hole in the ground and whispered into it, Midas has the ears of an ass.  From the hole then grew a tree which rustled the statement when the wind came.

2.      Dionysus told Midas whatever wish he made would come true.   Midas wished that whatever he touched would turn into gold.   Then he found he could not eat, since his food turned to gold at his touch.   Finally he was allowed to lose the gift by bathing in the river Pactolus.  That was why the river had golden sands.
