He was a wise Jotun (Frost Giant). He guarded the well of wisdom that lay under the roots of the life-tree Yggdrasil. He himself had drunk from the well and so he knew all things: past, present, and future. He allowed Odin to drink from the well at the cost of one of his eyes. Thereafter Odin always wore a lock of hair hanging over the empty socket, and he never smiled again after he had read the mystical runes. Later, Mimir was sent as a hostage to the Vanir, and they beheaded him. Odin got back his head, breathed life into it, and consulted it on important occasions.
