He was son of Apollo and Calliope.  He was the greatest of all mortal musicians.   His music-playing moved everything, including not only beasts of the field but even rocks and inanimate objects.   It was said to have drawn iron tears down Pluto's cheek, and so Pluto agreed to let Orpheus' wife Eurydice return to the upper world after she died from a snake-bite and came to Hades.   But Orpheus' devotion to his wife caused the fury of the Maenads, who tore him to pieces and threw his head into the river Hebrus.
