He was a famous Trojan leader and the hero of Virgil's Aeneid.  He fled the burning Troy after it was sacked by the Greeks, bearing his aged father Anchises on his back and leading his young son Ascanius.  Guided and protected by his divine mother, Aphrodite, he finally became the founder of Rome.  Before he reached Italy, however, he had a love affair with Dido, the Queen of Carthage.  But Jupiter bade him depart from his love and seek the kingdom promised to him.  Seeing that he was gone, Dido killed her self with the funeral pyre which she had built for the occasion.
