As the first
woman, Pandora was Zeus's revenge upon man for having accepted the fire which
Prometheus had stolen from heaven. With her name meaning “all gifted,” she did receive all gods' gifts that made
her attractive (and hence dangerous) to man. Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother,
married her, despite Prometheus's warning. She had a box in which all of
the world's ills had been collected, but she had been told not to open it.
Her curiosity, however, got the better of her. She opened the box, and out
flew all the ills that now afflict mankind. Only one thing remained behind:
hope.
