He was a ferryman ferrying between Lesbos and Chios.   Once Aphrodite came to him disguised as an ugly old woman.   He good-naturedly gave her a free passage on his boat.   In return she gave him a magic salve which made him young and handsome.   The woman of Lesbos, therefore , all fell in love with him.   The poetess Sappho is said to have thrown herself into the sea because he did not requite her affection.
