He inherited Hercules' invincible bow and mortal arrows from his father Poias.   On the way to Troy he was bitten by a serpent.   The wound gave off an offensive smell and its pain caused him to cry out continuously.   So the Greeks marooned him on the island of Lemnos.  Later, however, the Greeks learned that they could not win Troy without the bow and arrows of Hercules.   Therefore, they sent Odysseus and Diomedes back to Lemnos and persuaded Philoctetes to rejoin them.   At Troy Philoctetes slew Paris with one of his arrows and helped the Greeks win the final victory.
