He was Poseidon's son and he was a giant robber.  He let his victims lie on a bed.  If they were too short for the bed, he stretched their limbs until they fit.  If they were too long for the bed, he lopped off however much was necessary to make them fit.  Today, a Procrustean bed refers to a drastic, ruthless measure that demands conformity at any cost.

2.      He let his victims lie on a bed:他让他的受难者躺在个床上。 victim:牺牲者、受难者。

3.      If they were too short for the bed, he stretched their limbs until they fit:如果他们太短了合不来,他就把他们的四肢展延拉长到他们合适为止。 stretch:展延拉长。

4.      If they were too long for the bed, he lopped off however much was necessary to make them fit:如果他们太长而合不了床,他就切掉不管多少必要的部份,以便使他们适合。

5.      Today, a Procrustean bed refers to a drastic, ruthless measure that demands conformity at any cost:今天 Procrustean 的床,指个激烈的、残忍的「不管代价只求致」的手段。 measure:措施、手段。 drastic:激烈的。 at any cost:不惜任何代价。

              据说Theseus 后来便把 Procrustes 放在他自己的床上,然后截断他,使他自食恶果。今天,所有削足适履的行为都可以称之为 Procrustean
