hero of the first part of the Nibelungenlied. Like Achilles,
he was invulnerable in all but one place on his body. In Siegfried
this was a spot between the shoulder blades on which a leaf had fallen as he was
bathing in the blood of the dragon Fafnir, which he had slain. Brunhild
