Son of Aeolus, he was a comic rogue-hero.    He stopped his rival rogue Autolycus from stealing his cattle by attaching to the animals' hooves lead plates that imprinted “stolen by Autolycus” in the dust and mud as they were driven away.   Today, he is best known for being required throughout eternity to roll a huge stone to the top of a hill, only to have it plunge back down just as it reaches the crest.   He was set this eternal task, they say, as a means of keeping him too busy to plan other tricks.   But this task has become a symbol of futility. 

 

[解说]

1.      “Son of Aeolus, he was a comic rogue-hero”: Aeolus (风神) 的儿子，他是可笑的恶棍英雄。 “comic”: 喜剧性的、可笑的。

2.      “He stopped his rival rogue Autolycus from stealing his cattle by attaching to the animals' hooves lead plates”: 藉由在那些动物的蹄上附加铅片，他阻止他的敌对的恶棍  Autolycus, 使他不能偷他的牛。 “stop ...  from”: 阻止 … 使不能…。 “attach to B A” = “attach A to B”: 把 A 附到  B上。 “lead plates”: 铅片。 

            注意： “lead” 当「铅」解时，念音如 “led”。

3.      “that imprinted 'stolen by Autolycus' in the dust and mud as they were driven away”: 那 (铅片) 印出「被 Autolycus 偷走」(这些字) 在尘土和泥巴里，当牠们被赶走时。

4.      “Today, he is best known for being required throughout eternity to roll a huge stone to the top of a hill”: 今日，他最为人知的是：(他) 被要求永永远远地滚一块巨石到某山顶。 “known for ...”: 以…为人所知。 “throughout eternity”: 经由整个永恒，永永远远的。

5.      “only to have it plunge back down just as it reaches the crest”: 结果只是让它跃回下来，正当它到达顶端时。 “only to ...”: 结果 (只是) …。他例： “He left, only to die abroad” (他离开了，结果死在外地)。

6.      “He was set this eternal task, they say, as a means of keeping him too busy to plan other tricks”: 据说，他被赋予这个永恒的任务，当做一个方法来使他经常太忙而不会计划其它的诡计。 “they say” =  it is said : 据说。 “be set sth.”: 被给予某事。

7.      “But this task has become a symbol of futility”: 可是这个任务已经变成徒劳的象征。 “futile, futility”: 徒劳。
