Son of Aeolus, he was a comic rogue-hero.    He stopped his rival rogue Autolycus from stealing his cattle by attaching to the animals' hooves lead plates that imprinted ¡§stolen by Autolycus¡¨ in the dust and mud as they were driven away.   Today, he is best known for being required throughout eternity to roll a huge stone to the top of a hill, only to have it plunge back down just as it reaches the crest.   He was set this eternal task, they say, as a means of keeping him too busy to plan other tricks.   But this task has become a symbol of futility.
