She was daughter of Cepheus, King of the Aethiopians. Her mother Cassiopeia boasted that she was more beautiful than the Nereids, thus offending Poseidon. When a sea monster came to ravage the country, Andromeda was chained to a rock on the seashore to appease it. Perseus, however, came to her rescue on his return from decapitating Medusa. He killed the monster and demanded marriage with the girl. But Andromeda's uncle and some others opposed his marrying the maiden. They were turned into stone when Perseus exposed the head of the Medusa to them.
