He was the giant son of Poseidon and Earth.   Earth gave him great strength, with which he wrestled with all who passed by and killed them invariably until Hercules came.  With even greater strength Hercules held him aloft out of contact with the strength-giving Earth.  Thus, Antaeus' strength ebbed and he was killed.
